Biography

Dmitry Nikolayevich Kardovsky (August 24, 1866, Osurovo – February 9, 1943, Pereslavl-Zalessky) was a Russian graphic artist and painter, representative of academicism and a significant artistic figure of the Silver Age. Over his career, he worked in both the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. Kardovsky was a practicing pedagogue and master of book illustration, producing easel graphics and authorial cycles based on works of Russian classical literature. He also engaged in scenography and church painting. His works include historical scenes, portraits, and landscapes. In addition to his artistic activity, he worked as a typographer and was regarded as an influential art figure and teacher.
