Dionisius

Dionisius (1444–1502) was a leading Moscow icon painter and fresco master of the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Considered a successor to Andrei Rublev and the first documented Russian icon painter of the secular class, he worked during the era of the Grand Duchy of Moscow.

Biography

Dionisius (1444–1502) was an outstanding Moscow icon painter and fresco master active in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. He is regarded as a successor of the traditions of the famous Andrei Rublev and the first Russian artist of the secular class known from documents. His work is associated with the epoch of the Grand Duchy of Moscow. Dionisius worked in the genre of icon painting and was a recognized icon painter and artist of his time. Among his notable works is the icon “Theotokos Hodegetria.” Dionisius influenced the development of Russian icon painting and fresco art at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries.
