Biography
Cristóbal Rojas Poleo was born on December 15, 1857, in Cúa, Venezuela. He is regarded as one of the leading figures of the Romantic period in Venezuelan art. In the late 19th century, Rojas, together with Arturo Michelena, Martín Tovar y Tovar, and Antonio Herrera Toro, dominated the Venezuelan painting scene. His work gained popularity in Parisian art salons and was highly esteemed in Caracas, where he received commissions from the Venezuelan government. The dramatic nature of Rojas' paintings reflects aspects of his personal life. He passed away on November 8, 1890, in Caracas.
