Cristóbal de Villalpando

Biography

Cristóbal de Villalpando was born in 1669 in Mexico City, the capital of New Spain. His nationality is associated with New Spain and Spain. Villalpando was a Baroque painter and a notable representative of Creole culture. Besides his artistic work, he held administrative positions, including serving as captain of the guard. He created numerous Baroque-style works, which are today displayed in several Mexican cathedrals, such as those in Querétaro, Puebla, and Mexico City. Among his well-known works is a depiction of the Zócalo in Mexico City, illustrating the damage to the viceroyal palace following the 1692 riot. Cristóbal de Villalpando died on August 20, 1714, in Mexico City.
