Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro (1857–1929) was a Portuguese artist and portraitist, a leading representative of 19th-century Realism in Portugal, known for his portraits of notable contemporaries and his role in designing the modern Portuguese flag.
Biography
Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro was born on November 21, 1857, in Lisbon. He was a Portuguese artist, portraitist, and vexillologist, recognized as the foremost representative of Realism in 19th-century Portuguese painting. Portraiture occupied a significant place in his artistic work, with many portraits depicting notable contemporaries. In addition to his artistic career, Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro was a member of the commission that designed the modern flag of Portugal. He made a substantial contribution to Portuguese culture and arts during the royal period. The artist passed away on November 6, 1929, in Lisbon.
