Claude Monet

Biography

Oscar Claude Monet was born on November 14, 1840, in Paris, France. He was a graphic artist and painter who had a significant influence on the development of 19th and 20th-century painting. Monet is recognized as one of the founders of a movement in art known as Impressionism. His works are distinguished by his effort to convey nature as he perceived it, which made him one of the key predecessors of modernism. Throughout his life, he created works in the genres of portrait, landscape, and still life. Among Monet's most famous paintings are Impression, Sunrise, which gave its name to the entire Impressionist movement, as well as the series of paintings Water Lilies, Rouen Cathedral, Woman with a Parasol, The Picnic (Luncheon on the Grass), the Haystacks series, Magpie, Woman in the Garden at Sainte-Adresse, The Terrace at Sainte-Adresse, and Women in the Garden. Monet spent his final years living in the French village of Giverny, where he died on December 5, 1926.
