Chen Chong Swee

Biography

Chen Chong Swee was born in 1910 in Shantou. As a Singaporean artist, he belonged to the pioneering generation that developed and promoted the unique Nanyang style of painting in Singapore. This style emerged at the crossroads of cultures and expressed the regional specificity of Southeast Asia in the early 20th century. Chen Chong Swee was among the first artists in Singapore to apply Chinese ink painting techniques to create landscapes and figure compositions that reflected local and Southeast Asian themes. His career unfolded during a formative period for Singapore's modern artistic culture, and he played an important role in the establishment of national art. Chen Chong Swee passed away on February 15, 1985, in Singapore.
