Chen Cheng-po

Biography

Chen Cheng-po was born on February 2, 1895, in the Tainan Prefecture. He was a Taiwanese artist and politician who played a significant role in the development of the visual arts in Taiwan. In 1926, his oil painting "Jia Yi Street" became the first work by a Taiwanese artist to be presented at the seventh Teiten exhibition in Japan. Chen Cheng-po paid great attention not only to perfecting his own artistic skills but also to promoting aesthetic education among the people of Taiwan. He devoted his life to education and creativity, consistently caring for the development of humanistic culture on the island. His activities took place against the backdrop of changing national affiliations of the region, which included the Qing Empire, China, and the Republic of China (Taiwan). Chen Cheng-po passed away on March 25, 1947. His artistic and social legacy had a substantial impact on the cultural development of Taiwan.
