Carybé (born Hector Julio Páride Bernabó, 1911–1997) was an Argentine-Brazilian artist known as a painter, draftsman, illustrator, sculptor, historian, and journalist. He contributed to visual arts and cultural research and was a member of the Cruz Santa Opô Afonjá society focused on Candomblé culture.
Biography
Carybé, whose real name was Hector Julio Páride Bernabó, was born on February 7, 1911, in the city of Lanús. He gained recognition as an Argentine-Brazilian artist, working as a painter, draftsman, illustrator, sculptor, historian, and journalist. His nickname and artistic pseudonym, Carybé, originated during his time as a scout and is associated with a type of piranha. His work spanned various fields of visual art and scientific research. Additionally, Carybé was a member of the Cruz Santa Opô Afonjá society, which is dedicated to the study and preservation of Candomblé culture. He passed away on October 2, 1997, in Salvador, Brazil.
