Biography

Breyten Breytenbach was born on September 16, 1939, in Robertson, South Africa. He gained recognition as a South African writer, poet, artist, lithographer, and essayist, as well as a figure in the visual arts and a political activist. Breytenbach played a significant role in African culture and was affiliated with the Sestigers movement. His work was produced in both Afrikaans and English. Additionally, he held French citizenship. His activities included being a vocal opponent of apartheid. Breyten Breytenbach passed away on November 24, 2024, in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, France.
