Boris Ioganson

Boris Vladimirovich Ioganson (1893–1973) was a Russian Soviet painter and graphic artist, a representative of socialist realism, educator, and museum figure. He specialized in historical-revolutionary narrative paintings, and also worked as a portraitist and book illustrator.

Biography

Boris Vladimirovich Ioganson was born on July 13, 1893, in Moscow. He was a Russian Soviet painter and graphic artist associated with the socialist realism movement. Ioganson was also a theorist of this artistic direction and one of the leading Moscow artists of the Stalin era. In addition to his creative work, he was an educator and a museum figure. Narrative paintings on historical-revolutionary themes occupied a special place in his work, and he also worked as a portraitist and book illustrator. From 1951 to 1954, he served as the director of the Tretyakov Gallery. He was among the first full members and served as president of the USSR Academy of Arts. In 1943, he was awarded the title of People's Artist of the USSR. Boris Vladimirovich was a laureate of two Stalin Prizes of the first degree and was honored with the title Hero of Socialist Labor in 1968. He passed away on February 25, 1973, in Moscow. His activity was linked to both the Russian Empire and the USSR, with his creative direction firmly rooted in socialist realism.
