Basuki Abdullah
Basuki Abdullah (1915–1993) was an Indonesian painter and court artist born in Surakarta. He studied art academically in The Hague and taught during the Japanese occupation. His works in realism have been exhibited internationally, including at the National Gallery of Indonesia.
Biography
Basuki Abdullah was born on January 25, 1915, in Surakarta, Indonesia. He received formal artistic education in The Hague, which laid the foundation for his professional career. During the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies, he worked as an art teacher. Abdullah was a prominent Indonesian artist committed to realism, and his works were exhibited at the National Gallery of Indonesia. After World War II, his artworks gained international recognition; notably, he won a competition related to the accession of Queen Juliana in the Netherlands. Due to his artistic status, he was given the opportunity to create an official portrait of Indonesia's President Suharto. Basuki Abdullah passed away on November 5, 1993, in Jakarta.
