Atta Kwami
Atta Kwami (1956–2021) was a Ghanaian artist, graphic designer, art historian, and curator. Born in Accra, he studied and taught at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi and in the UK. His work explored Ghanaian architectural forms and traditional African textiles.
Biography
Atta Kwami was born on September 14, 1956, in Accra, Ghana. He was an artist and graphic designer, as well as an independent art historian and curator. He received his education and taught at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, Ghana, and also in the United Kingdom. In his work, Atta Kwami employed improvisational approaches to form and color, drawing inspiration from the unique Ghanaian architecture and African striped textiles such as Kente and fabrics of the Ewe and Asante peoples. His artworks emphasize the cultural significance of Ghanaian traditions. One of his notable works is "Lanier Place Goddess II." Atta Kwami passed away on October 6, 2021.
