Antonio Sciortino
Antonio Sciortino (1879–1947) was a Maltese sculptor known for evolving from realism to futurism, influenced by Auguste Rodin, and developing his own unique style. He served as honorary director of the British Academy of Arts in Rome (1911–1936) and later as curator of the Fine Arts Museum in Valletta.
Biography
Antonio Sciortino was born on January 25, 1879, in the town of Zebbug, Malta. He became a prominent Maltese sculptor whose creative journey marked an evolution from realism to futurism. Early in his career, Sciortino was influenced by the great French sculptor Auguste Rodin, and over time he developed his own distinctive style. From 1911 to 1936, Antonio held the position of honorary director at the British Academy of Arts in Rome. Beginning in 1937, he worked as the curator of the Fine Arts Museum in Malta’s capital, Valletta. Antonio Sciortino died on August 10, 1947, in Valletta.
