Antonietta Raphael
Antonietta Raphael (1895–1975) was an Italian sculptor and painter of Lithuanian Jewish origin. Born in Kaunas, she co-founded the Roman School movement with her husband Mario Mafai. After World War II, she focused on sculpture, noted for its delicate and lively stone plasticity.
Biography
Antonietta Raphael was born in 1895 in the city of Kaunas, Lithuania. Of Jewish descent, she maintained strong ties with Italy and the Kingdom of Italy throughout her life. As a talented sculptor and painter, she co-founded the Roman School of figurative art together with her husband Mario Mafai. Primarily active after World War II, she devoted herself to sculpture, in which she expressed a distinctly anti-academic worldview. Her works are characterized by a delicate and lively plasticity of stone, prominently visible in pieces such as "Miriam Dormiente" and "Nemesis." Antonietta Raphael passed away on September 5, 1975, in Rome.
