Antoine Camilleri

Biography

Antoine Camilleri was born on February 5, 1922, in Valletta, Malta. He was an artist and art educator who made a significant contribution to the development of Maltese modern and contemporary art. Camilleri holds a special place in Maltese modern art as a passionate father figure, a devoted teacher, and an artist shaped by the hardships of life. His work is characterized by a strong personal tone and is often based on events and experiences from his own life. He frequently repeated his own self-portrait in his works, using a variety of materials including oil paint, linocuts, clay, and found objects (objet trouvé). Throughout his creative career, Antoine Camilleri experimented with different materials and is mainly remembered for his unique style of clay paintings, which involved working with and manipulating clay and its dry, cracked texture. He passed away on November 23, 2005.
