Biography

Antanas Žmuidzinavičius was born on October 19, 1876, in the city of Seirijai. Throughout his life, he was engaged as a painter, sculptor, educator, and art collector. His life and career were intertwined with three states: the Russian Empire, Lithuania, and the USSR, reflecting the changes in political regimes and territorial borders during his lifetime. Žmuidzinavičius primarily worked in the genre of portraiture, which was one of his main creative specializations. His artistic achievements were recognized by the high honorary title of People's Artist of the USSR, awarded in 1957, and in the following year, 1958, he was elected as a Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Arts. Antanas Žmuidzinavičius passed away on August 9, 1966, in Kaunas. His contribution to the arts included not only his creative work but also his efforts in education and the collection of artworks, demonstrating his multifaceted impact on the cultural life of the region.
