Biography

Andrew Newell Wyeth (July 12, 1917, Chadds Ford Township – January 16, 2009, Chadds Ford Township) was an American artist and cultural figure, one of the leading representatives of realism in 20th-century American visual art. He was born and lived all his life in the USA. Wyeth worked in the genres of landscape, portrait, and genre painting. He is the author of famous works including “That Gentleman” and “Christina’s World.” Since 1978, Wyeth was an honorary foreign member of the USSR Academy of Arts. He was the son of the illustrator Newell Convers Wyeth, brother of inventor Nathaniel Wyeth and artist Henriette Wyeth Hurd, and the father of artist Jamie Wyeth. In his works, he combined traditional techniques with a realistic style, continuing the family's artistic tradition.
