Andrés de Santa Maria (1860–1945) was a Colombian artist and a pioneer of Impressionism in his country. Born in Bogotá, he spent much of his life in Europe. He was also known as a sculptor and a university teacher.

Biography

Andrés de Santa Maria was born on December 16, 1860, in Bogotá, Colombia. He became one of the most renowned Colombian artists of his time and a pioneer of Impressionism in his homeland. Working independently as an avant-garde artist, he laid the foundations for modern art in Colombia. His exploration of new artistic forms provoked mixed reactions and debates surrounding his work. Besides painting, Santa Maria also practiced sculpture and worked as a university teacher. He spent most of his life in Europe, where he continued to develop his artistic legacy. He died on April 29, 1945, in Brussels.
