Andrejs Upīts
Andrejs Upīts (1877–1970) was a Latvian Soviet writer, poet, playwright, satirist, and critic. Honored as People's Writer of the Latvian SSR in 1943, laureate of the Stalin Prize in 1946, and Hero of Socialist Labour in 1967.
Biography
Andrejs Martynovich Upīts was born on November 22, 1877, in Skriveri. Throughout his life, he distinguished himself as a novelist, poet, playwright, satirist, and literary critic, as well as a public figure. Upīts was recognized as People's Writer of the Latvian SSR in 1943. In 1946, he became an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Latvian SSR and was awarded the Stalin Prize of the second degree. For his contributions to Soviet literature and culture, Andrejs Upīts was conferred the title Hero of Socialist Labour in 1967. He worked primarily in the genre of the novella and was also engaged in translation and research activities. His national identity included the Russian Empire, Latvia, and the USSR. Andrejs Martynovich Upīts passed away on November 17, 1970, in Riga.
