Ana Mercedes Hoyos

Biography

Ana Mercedes Hoyos was born on September 29, 1942, in Bogotá, Colombia. She was a prominent Colombian painter, sculptor, and one of the pioneers of contemporary art in her country. Over a creative career spanning more than fifty years, Hoyos received over seventeen national and international awards. She began her artistic journey in the pop art style, gradually transitioning to abstraction, then cubism and realism, exploring light, color, sensuality, and the richness of the surrounding world. Her interpretations of masterworks served as a starting point for examining the diversity of Colombian culture. Her later works focused on Afro-Colombian and mestizo heritage within the Colombian landscape. Ana Mercedes Hoyos’s works are part of the permanent collections of institutions such as the Fuji Art Museum in Tokyo, the Ibercaja Collection in Zaragoza, the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City, the Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn Harbor, New York, as well as museums in Latin American cities including the Juan Antonio Roda Museum. A collection of her archival materials related to San Basilio de Palenque has been donated to the United Nations University in Tokyo and the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. Ana Mercedes Hoyos died on September 5, 2014, in her hometown of Bogotá.
