Alexandre Benois

Biography

Alexandre Nikolaevich Benois was born on April 21, 1870, in Saint Petersburg, Russian Empire. Throughout his life, he was engaged in multiple artistic and cultural roles including artist, writer, art historian, theatrical decorator and director, art critic, memoirist, and museum professional. His versatile creative work spanned a variety of disciplines such as designer, decorator, theatrical designer, costume artist, critic, librettist, choreographer, draftsman, scenographer, ex-libris artist, and artistic critic. Alexandre Nikolaevich was among the most renowned representatives of the Russified French Benois family. He initiated a private circle which later developed into the artistic association known as "World of Art" and the eponymous magazine. During his lifetime, Benois lived in several countries, reflecting his cultural affiliations with the Russian Empire, Russia, and France. He died on February 9, 1960, in Paris, France.
