Alexander Litovchenko

Biography

Alexander Dmitrievich Litovchenko was born on March 14, 1835, in the city of Kremenchug. He was a Russian painter who worked during the period of the Great Reforms and counter-reforms of the Russian Empire. Litovchenko was active in Saint Petersburg and was associated with Ivan Kramskoi’s circle and the first wave of the 'Peredvizhniki' (The Wanderers) movement. He became known as a master of historical painting, creating works based on subjects from Russian history of the 16th and 17th centuries, and was also recognized as a portraitist. Litovchenko participated in the 'Revolt of the Fourteen', was one of the founding members of the Saint Petersburg Artel of Artists, and a member of the 'Peredvizhniki' society. On June 19, 1890, Alexander Dmitrievich passed away in Saint Petersburg. For his artistic achievements, he was awarded the title of academician by the Imperial Academy of Arts.
