Aleksandr Gerasimov
Aleksandr Mikhailovich Gerasimov (1881–1963) was a Russian painter active in Moscow during the Silver Age and early Soviet decades. Initially a follower of Russian Impressionists, he later became a leading figure in Socialist Realism during Stalin’s era.
Biography
Aleksandr Mikhailovich Gerasimov was born on August 12, 1881, in Michurinsk. He was a Russian artist and art figure who worked in Moscow throughout the Silver Age and the early decades of the Soviet period. Early in his career, he was a dedicated representative of the "Russian Impressionists" circle. During the Stalin era, Gerasimov became one of the ideologists of the Socialist Realism movement and was active in teaching. He excelled in narrative painting focused on historical and revolutionary themes, and also produced portraits and landscapes. In addition to painting, he worked in architectural graphics and monumental sculpture. Aleksandr Mikhailovich Gerasimov passed away on July 23, 1963, in Moscow. His work spans multiple genres and reflects the artistic directions of the Russian Empire, RSFSR, and USSR.
