Albert Marenčin

Biography

Albert Marenčin was born on July 26, 1922, in the town of Bystre, in what was then Czechoslovakia. He was a renowned Slovak cultural figure who combined multiple creative roles throughout his life. Marenčin distinguished himself as a writer, poet, and surrealist, as well as an essayist and critic, reflecting the breadth of his interests and artistic pursuits. Beyond his literary work, he was also a screenwriter and playwright, as well as a director. A significant part of his creative life was connected to the visual arts; he was known as a collage artist and photographer. An important aspect of his activity was his work as a translator and linguist, underscoring his deep understanding of language and culture. Albert Marenčin passed away on March 9, 2019, in Bratislava, Slovakia. His contributions span both literary and artistic fields, marking him as a notable figure in the cultural history of Czechoslovakia and Slovakia.
