Afewerk Tekle

Biography

Afewerk Tekle was born on September 22, 1932, in Ankober, Ethiopia. He became recognized as an Ethiopian sculptor, painter, graphic artist, and designer of postage stamps. His artistic work encompassed several forms of art, including sculpture, painting, and graphic design. In 1983, Afewerk Tekle was awarded the title of Honorary Member of the USSR Academy of Arts, becoming the first African artist to receive this distinction. He lived and worked in Ethiopia throughout his life. Afewerk Tekle passed away on April 10, 2012, in Addis Ababa.
