Abdülmecid II
Abdülmecid II (May 29, 1868 – August 23, 1944) was the last caliph of the Ottoman dynasty and the only caliph in the empire who was not also a sultan. He was also known as an artist and had cultural ties to Turkey and the Ottoman Empire.
Biography
Abdülmecid II was born on May 29, 1868, in Beşiktaş, then part of the Ottoman Empire. He was the last caliph of the Ottoman dynasty and the only one to hold the title without concurrently being a sultan. Known historically as Abdülmecid Efendi, he was recognized not only as a religious and political figure but also as an artist. His national and cultural identity was connected to Turkey and the Ottoman Empire. Following the abolition of the caliphate and the fall of the Ottoman Empire, Abdülmecid II lived in exile. He passed away in Paris, France, on August 23, 1944.
