Abanindranath Tagore

Biography

Abanindranath Tagore was born on August 7, 1871, in Calcutta, then part of British India. He became a prominent Indian artist and art instructor who significantly influenced the development of modern Indian painting. Tagore primarily worked in the genre of portraiture, producing works that received widespread acclaim. Among his most important works are "Bharat Mata," "Shakuntala," "Khirer Putul," "Alor Phulki," "Buro Angla," and "Bharatshilpe Murti." Beyond painting, he was also an author engaged in novel writing, essayism, children’s literature, and short stories. During his lifetime, he was connected with the cultural traditions of British India, India, and the Indian Union. Abanindranath Tagore lived nearly 80 years and passed away on December 5, 1951, in his native city of Calcutta.
